The Fourth of July is always filled with family traditions – parades, picnics, barbecues, bonfires and of course, the fireworks! A family favorite is participating in a neighborhood bike parade, which always ends with popsicles for the mini cyclists. This year, we’re trading wagons and tricycles for bicycles, so I thought it would be a perfect time to celebrate with a bike decorating party in preparation for the big parade. This was such a fun, but simple party to pull together. Party planning can be overwhelming, but I try to approach it in stages and incorporate the theme into the food, decorations and activities. The Food I love things that are simple to make, on-theme and most importantly, delicious. Since it’s the 4th of July, I incorporated some elements of Americana – pies and glass bottled Cokes – as well as BBQ favorites like watermelon and lemonade.
Treats are easily dressed up with lollipop sticks and cut-outs of the American flag – adorable and effortless! Recipe: Patriotic Popcorn The “Patriotic Popcorn” is an adaptation of a Pinterest recipe and a perennial favorite.
Swap out M&M colors based on the holiday, or match to your color palette with M&Ms and you have a go-to recipe for any party. Serve alongside paper treat bags so your guests can take home extra as a party favor! Patriotic Popcorn: 2 bags popcorn, unsalted 1 12 oz. Bag M&Ms 1 12 oz.
Bag Vanilla Candy Melts (available at your local craft store) Pop popcorn in microwave, remove unpopped kernels and pour into large bowl. Heat Candy Melts in microwave or double boiler according to instructions on package. Pour over popcorn and stir until evenly coated. Add M&Ms and stir until evenly distrubted. Pour mixture into a single layer on parchment paper.
Allow to cool and harden, break up any large clumps and store in airtight container until ready to serve. The Decorations By keeping the food table(s) the focal point of your party, you can cut down on the amount of decorating you need to do. I love grabbing fun fabric at Ikea or my local fabric store to make tablecloths. Just pick up iron-on hem tape for a simple no-sew version! I love finishing the table off with a banner above it. You can make your own or buy an easy pre-made kit from our friends at. The Activities Of course, the main activity of the party was decorating bikes.

Wrapping them in crepe paper certainly kept younger party-goers busy for a while, but it’s always fun to have multiple activities. A bucket full of star-shaped chalk and a quick and easy DIY Lawn Tic-Tac-Toe made with these wooden letters from Target and a few wooden dowels is a fun novelty that you can use all summer long. And when all else fails, bubbles are always a hit.
